Shri Sankat Mochan Temple, also known as the Monkey Temple of Varanasi, is one of the most beloved and spiritually significant temples in the city. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the “reliever of all troubles,” it attracts lakhs of devotees each month seeking strength, healing, and peace.
Nestled in the Lanka area near the Assi River (now reduced to a seasonal stream), the temple was founded in the 16th century by the saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas, who is said to have had a divine vision of Hanuman at this very spot. The present-day idol of Hanuman is believed to be placed exactly where this sacred encounter occurred.
Walking through the temple’s old gate, a tree-lined serpentine path lit by soft lamps gives visitors a rare glimpse into the ancient spiritual atmosphere of Kashi — once called Anandvan, the forest of bliss. The temple complex features two main shrines: one dedicated to Hanuman, the other to Ram, Sita, and Lakshman, positioned so that Hanuman always has darshan of his Lord.
Highlights and Significance
-
Tulsi Tree: A sacred fig tree under which Tulsidas is said to have composed parts of the Ramcharitmanas.
-
Offerings: Devotees bring besan laddoos, marigolds, sindoor, and chant the Hanuman Chalisa, copies of which are freely available in the courtyard.
-
Healing Beliefs: Especially visited on Tuesdays and Saturdays to seek relief from planetary afflictions related to Mangal (Mars) and Shani (Saturn).
-
Known for Monkeys: The temple is affectionately called the “Monkey Temple” due to the many monkeys that peacefully inhabit the premises.
In 2006, a tragic bomb blast occurred inside the temple complex, leading to several casualties. Since then, the temple has implemented strict security protocols including lockers at each gate, electronic bans, and restricted access for public events.
